Rev. Sylvester Smith Jr. became the pastor of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in December 2002.
He was born May 17, 1956 in Hempstead, Texas. He is the oldest son of Sylvester Smith Sr. and Lottie M. Jackson. He is the second of nine siblings. Rev. Smith was nurtured by his mother and loving grandparents, the late Rev. & Mrs. James Jackson Sr.
He received his academic diploma from Hempstead Sr. High School and then he matriculated to Prairie View A & M University in Prairie View, Texas. He attained a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Education and a Master's Degree in Mid-Management.
As a youth, he took on a more mature role so he could help his mother support and give guidance to his younger siblings. He admired his younger brothers for supporting the family when their mother was ill.
In May 1979, he accepted his call into the gospel ministry at Enlighten Chapel Baptist Church in Waller, Texas under the leadership of Dr. Herschel C. Smith. He began serving as a Sunday School teacher. Being a loyal and devoted servant to God and his church, he did whatever his Pastor asked of him.
In February 1983, he was called to the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Port Arthur, Texas and was installed as the Pastor on April 17th. While pastoring at Mt. Calvary, he attended Bailey Theological Seminary in Houston, Texas and continued theological growth by attending various institutes and seminars.
He's currently an Instructional Service Manager at Memorial High School in Port Arthur, Texas. During the 1997-1998 school year, he received the Teacher of the Year award.
His hobbies include reading, fishing, bowling, walking, golfing and traveling. His favorite song is "WALK WITH ME LORD". As he travels through life's journey, he wants GOD to "CLOTHE HIM WITH THE SPIRIT OF HUMILITY"
Rev. Smith and his wife, Madlyn Renee have one son, Trason and three daughters: Kristian, Michellee and Desiree.
